Twelve students were expelled from a university degree exam in Jamalpur after being caught with cheating materials during a surprise inspection by the local administration.
The expulsions took place on Saturday afternoon, July 25, at the Abdul Khalek Government Memorial College examination center in Dewanganj, during the compulsory English language test for the third-year degree exam.
Caught During a Routine Inspection
According to the Upazila Secondary Education Bureau, the incident occurred on the third day of the university’s third-year degree examination. The Upazila Executive Officer (UNO), Shah Zahurul Hossain, arrived at the examination center to conduct an inspection while the exam was underway.
During the inspection, cheating materials were found in the possession of 12 examinees. Following the National University’s examination regulations, they were ordered to be expelled from the center.
The Upazila Academic Supervisor, Sajal Kumar Bhadra, confirmed the action, stating that the 12 candidates were expelled from the center by order of the UNO, in accordance with the examination regulations.
Six From Each of Two Colleges
The disqualified candidates came from an equal number of two institutions. Six of them are students at Hatibhanga Mofazzal Mia Memorial College, and the remaining six are students at Sanandbari Degree College.
Both institutions are affiliated, and their students took the exam at the Dewanganj center, as is standard practice in the National University system, where several faculties share designated exam venues.
“Inspections Will Continue”
Regarding the measure, UN official Shah Zahurul Hossain stated that there is no room for any kind of cheating or irregularity at the testing center. He added that the centers are inspected daily to ensure that the exams are conducted in a fair, transparent, and cheat-free environment, and that this oversight will continue.
This statement highlights an increasingly visible approach to oversight during this exam season, with local authorities conducting unannounced visits to testing centers rather than relying solely on supervisors.
What Expulsion Means for These Students
Expulsion from an exam center is not limited to simply failing a single test. In the National University system, cases of cheating are referred to the university’s Examination Disciplinary Committee, which reviews each case and determines sanctions based on the severity of the infraction. Depending on this review, the consequences can extend beyond the affected subject.
For candidates currently in the middle of their exam cycle, this poses a much greater risk than a single failed test—a crucial reminder for all students still taking exams this season.
