Despite being blind since birth, Tahmina Akter Moumi has earned a GPA 5 in the HSC examination through years of hard work and determination.

Tahmina Akter Moumi, a visually impaired student from Juri upazila in Moulvibazar, has achieved a GPA 5 in this year’s Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examination. She is a student of Sylhet Government Madan Mohan College.

Born blind, Moumi has overcome several challenges to continue her education. Her achievement has brought joy to her family, teachers and well-wishers.

Moumi is the daughter of Abdul Ahad and Amina Akter Pushpa. Her family lives in Jaifarnagar village of Juri. She has been dedicated to her studies from an early age.

She currently lives at the Green Disabled Foundation (GDF) in Sylhet as a residential student. The organisation works for the welfare of visually impaired people. Moumi has been staying at the institution since Class One.

Bayezid Ahmed Khan, executive director of GDF, expressed pride in her result. He said Moumi had been a residential student at the institution since her primary school years.

“We are extremely delighted and proud of her exceptional and glorious achievement,” he said.

Moumi said she wanted to show that physical limitations should not prevent anyone from receiving an education. She also thanked her parents, teachers and the GDF for their support.

“It is true that I cannot see the light of the world with my eyes, but everyone has the right to dream,” she said.

She added that the achievement was not hers alone. She now wants to pursue higher education and serve the country.

Scribe helped her complete the examination

Because of her visual impairment, Moumi took the HSC examination with the help of a scribe. Pallab Roy, a student who passed the SSC examination from Haji Abdus Sattar High School, worked as her scribe.

He wrote down the answers as Moumi dictated them during the examination. His assistance played an important role in helping her complete the exams.

Moumi’s father, Abdul Ahad, said his daughter had been unable to see since birth. However, the family never discouraged her from studying because of her strong interest in education.

He said the family was proud of her result and asked everyone to pray for her future success.

Moumi’s achievement highlights the importance of determination, family support and access to education. Her success also shows why students with visual impairments need proper educational facilities and support.

Her family, teachers and local well-wishers have expressed happiness over the result. Moumi now plans to continue her studies and work towards her goal of serving Bangladesh.
