The government has raised the prices of diesel, octane, petrol and kerosene by Tk 20 per litre. The new prices will take effect from 12:00 midnight on Sunday, September 21, according to a press release from the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources.
Under the revised rates, diesel will cost Tk 135 per litre, up from Tk 115. Octane will rise to Tk 165 from Tk 145, while petrol will increase to Tk 160 from Tk 140. Kerosene will rise to Tk 155 from Tk 135.
Fuel prices had remained unchanged in September. Before the latest decision, diesel sold for Tk 115 per litre. Kerosene cost Tk 135, octane Tk 145 and petrol Tk 140.
The latest increase follows a major price adjustment in April. At that time, diesel rose by Tk 15 per litre. Octane, petrol and kerosene increased by Tk 20, Tk 19 and Tk 18, respectively.
The energy division said international fuel prices and freight charges have risen sharply since March. It linked the increase to the ongoing war in the Middle East.
The government said it had kept domestic fuel prices unchanged despite the rise in global prices. It said the decision was taken in the public interest.
According to the energy division, the Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation incurred losses of about Tk 22,875 crore and Tk 66 lakh from March to August.
The revised prices will come into effect from midnight on September 21. Consumers will therefore pay the new rates for fuel purchased after the new prices take effect.
