The event in Ishwardi focused on nuclear energy, the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, energy security and radiation safety.

Students from Pabna University of Science and Technology (PUST) took part in the Bangladesh National Youth Nuclear Dialogue 2026 in Ishwardi, Pabna, on Saturday (November 7).

The event was held at the Nuclear Information Centre in Ishwardi Upazila at 10:30 am. It brought together government officials, representatives of Rosatom, nuclear energy experts and university students to discuss the future of nuclear energy in Bangladesh.

Ishwardi Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Hasan Mohammad Swaib attended as a chief guest. Other participants included Ms Olga Visneskaya, a Rosatom representative in human resources and project management, and Promoth Chandra Bauddha, a member of Impact Team 2050.

Discussions Focus on Nuclear Energy and Rooppur Plant

The dialogue covered nuclear energy and Bangladesh’s energy security. Participants also discussed the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant and its expected role in the country’s development.

Other key topics included nuclear science, modern nuclear technology and radiation safety. Speakers also highlighted the role of nuclear energy in environmental protection and sustainable development.

The event featured an exchange of views and a question-and-answer session. Students had the opportunity to raise questions and share their views with experts and other participants.

Rosatom Representative Highlights Rooppur Project

Speaking at the event, Olga Visneskaya said the engineering division she represents is involved in building nuclear power plants in different parts of the world.

She said Russian engineers developed the technologies used in these projects. She also highlighted the role of Rosatom-supported projects in environmental safety.

Visneskaya said Bangladesh had made progress in the peaceful use of nuclear energy over recent decades. She added that electricity from the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant would soon reach people’s homes.

“We are extremely delighted to be directly involved in the construction of Bangladesh’s nuclear power plant,” she said.

She also said the project was being implemented jointly with Bangladesh. According to her, the plant would support industrial growth and help advance the country’s economy.

Expert Discusses Nuclear Energy and Climate Change

Promoth Chandra Bauddha discussed the connection between nuclear energy and global efforts to address climate change.

He referred to an agreement reached by countries at the latest climate conference. Under the target he mentioned, the world’s current nuclear power generation capacity would triple by 2050.

Bauddha said reducing greenhouse gas emissions required a move towards cleaner energy sources. He identified solar and wind power as important renewable energy options, while noting that nuclear energy could also contribute.

He explained that solar and wind power do not always produce electricity continuously. For this reason, he stressed the importance of baseload power in an electricity system.

Baseload power refers to a steady supply of electricity over an extended period. He said this type of supply was important for maintaining a reliable electricity system.

Youth Engagement in Bangladesh’s Energy Future

The dialogue provided PUST students with an opportunity to learn about nuclear science, energy security and the Rooppur project. It also allowed them to discuss nuclear technology and safety with people involved in the sector.

As Bangladesh moves towards introducing nuclear-generated electricity, public understanding of nuclear energy and radiation safety remains important. The discussions also highlighted the links between reliable electricity, industrial development and environmental protection.

The Bangladesh National Youth Nuclear Dialogue 2026 brought together young people and sector representatives to discuss these issues. The Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant and its contribution to the country’s energy sector remained central to the discussions.
