Students of Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology have continued their protest and demanded the reinstatement of Professor Dr. Abu Sadat Mohammad Sayem.
Students of Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) held a mass signature campaign on Wednesday (September 23) to protest the change of the university’s vice-chancellor.
The campaign began at around 11:20am at the university’s Central Shaheed Minar premises. Students joined the campaign and provided their student ID numbers and signatures.
Students were also seen collecting signatures at different locations across the campus. The protesters said the signatures would be sent to the higher authorities.
Farhan Hasnat Adib, a third-year student of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, said the students began protesting after Professor Dr. Abu Sadat Mohammad Sayem was removed from the vice-chancellor’s position on September 21.
“On the 21st, our Abu Sadat Sayem sir was relieved of his position as vice-chancellor without prior notice,” he said.
According to Adib, students held a procession on the night of September 21. They then observed a complete shutdown at CUET on September 22 as part of their protest programme.
He said Wednesday’s signature campaign was part of the ongoing movement. The students plan to send the signatures to the higher authorities.
“Our peaceful movement will continue until our demands are met,” Adib said.
The students’ protest began after Professor Dr. Abu Sadat Mohammad Sayem was removed as CUET vice-chancellor. Professor Dr. Sheikh Shariful Alam of Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET) was appointed as the new vice-chancellor, according to the information provided by the protesters.

Following the decision, students staged protests on the night of September 21. They also locked the vice-chancellor’s building and announced a shutdown of academic and administrative activities.
The university’s academic and administrative activities were reportedly still under shutdown on Wednesday as the students continued their protest.
The signature campaign is the latest programme in the students’ movement. The collected signatures are expected to be submitted to the higher authorities as part of their demand for the reinstatement of Professor Dr. Abu Sadat Mohammad Sayem.
