Students who fail one or two subjects will get another chance through supplementary exams, while those who fail again can pursue technical education or retake the exams as regular students.
Education Minister A N M Ehsanul Haque Milon has outlined the options for students who fail one or two subjects in the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examinations. The supplementary examination is scheduled for December 2, with results expected by December 23.
Students who fail the supplementary examination will still have options to continue their education. They can enrol in technical and vocational education programmes or sit for the examinations again later as regular students.
The minister shared the information on Thursday during a visit to Shamsul Haque Khan School and College in Demra, Dhaka. The event also marked the inauguration of the institution’s smart classrooms.
Liu Haixing, head of the International Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), inaugurated the smart classrooms.
Supplementary exams to give students another chance
Milon said the initiative would help students avoid losing an entire academic year because of failing in only one or two subjects.
He said the supplementary examination system was being introduced through this year’s HSC examinations. The government plans to extend the opportunity to both Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and HSC examinations in the future.
According to the minister, students who pass the supplementary examinations will have a better opportunity to prepare for the next academic year. The initiative also aims to reduce delays in university admission activities.
HSC re-scrutiny results by November 23
The Education Minister also shared an update on the review of HSC examination results.
Applications for re-scrutiny of answer scripts are being accepted from November 1 to November 7. The results of the review process are expected to be published by November 23.
Milon said the results would be published quickly to help students with university admission preparations. Admission activities at Dhaka University and several other public universities are expected to begin this month.
He also said the government had decided to take disciplinary action against examiners responsible for negligence, errors and irregularities during answer script evaluation.
Examiners with weak assessment skills will also receive training to improve the quality of examination marking.
What happens to students who fail supplementary exams?
Students who fail even after taking the supplementary examination will not lose their opportunity to continue education.
According to Milon, they will be able to pursue technical and vocational education if they wish. They can also take the HSC examinations again later as regular students.
The minister said the government had also considered the risks students may face during long academic breaks. These include mobile phone addiction and drug abuse.
The planned supplementary examination and faster result publication aim to reduce unnecessary academic delays. Students will be able to choose their next educational path based on their examination results and future plans.
