Educational institutions have been instructed to organise special programmes, including discussions and essay competitions, despite the government holiday.
Teachers and students across Bangladesh have been asked to attend their respective educational institutions on Saturday, November 7, to observe National Revolution and Solidarity Day. The government has declared the day a public holiday, but educational institutions must arrange special programmes to mark the occasion.
The instructions were issued by the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education (DSHE) in a letter signed by Assistant Director (General Administration) Md. Rezaul Karim on Tuesday, November 3.
According to the letter, educational institutions must observe the government-prescribed programmes for National Revolution and Solidarity Day. They have been asked to organise special discussion sessions and essay competitions among students to highlight the significance of the day.
The DSHE has also issued a separate letter instructing educational institutions to hoist the national flag on the occasion.
Although November 7 is a public holiday, the scheduled programmes mean that relevant teachers and students will have to attend their institutions. They are expected to take part in the activities arranged to mark the day.
Earlier, the government issued a notification declaring November 7 a public holiday on the occasion of National Revolution and Solidarity Day. However, as the holiday falls on Saturday this year, government employees will not receive an additional day off.
The instructions mean that the regular Saturday holiday will not prevent educational institutions from holding the scheduled observance. Teachers and students concerned must attend their respective institutions and participate in the programmes on November 7.
