The state minister said discussions are underway with the Bangladesh Public Service Commission to fill vacant headteacher posts across the country.
Bobby Hajjaj, State Minister for Primary and Mass Education, has announced plans to speed up the recruitment of headteachers for government primary schools across Bangladesh. He made the announcement on Monday, October 26, during visits to two government primary schools in Old Dhaka.
The minister said around 34,500 headteacher posts remain vacant nationwide. Discussions are underway with the Bangladesh Public Service Commission (BPSC) to complete the recruitment process quickly.
Promotion of experienced teachers under consideration
Hajjaj said the government is also considering promoting skilled and experienced teachers to headteacher positions. The process will follow existing recruitment rules and BPSC procedures, he added.
According to the minister, filling the vacant posts could help improve school leadership and administrative activities. The government will take the necessary steps in coordination with the relevant authorities.
The minister also said the recruitment of assistant teachers would need to be considered again after the headteacher recruitment process is completed.
Minister visits two schools in Old Dhaka
Hajjaj made the announcement while visiting Mahutuli Renaissance Government Primary School and Prasanna Poddar Lane Government Primary School in the Kotwali area of Old Dhaka.
Officials from the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education, the Directorate of Primary Education and the local administration were present during the visits.
Appellate Division verdict resolves legal complication
Meanwhile, the full verdict of the Appellate Division has been published in a case involving the seniority and promotion of teachers at nationalised primary schools.
Attorney General Md. Ruhul Quddus said the verdict has resolved a long-standing legal complication related to the recruitment of headteachers for around 32,000 government primary schools.
The 29-page verdict was published on Sunday, October 25. It allows the state’s appeal against a High Court verdict concerning teachers’ seniority and promotion.
What happens next?
The proposed recruitment process will depend on coordination with the BPSC and compliance with the existing rules. The authorities are also considering the promotion of experienced teachers as part of efforts to fill the vacant headteacher posts.
The next steps will determine how the recruitment process moves forward and when the vacant positions can be filled.
