Professor Md. Lutfor Rahman took charge as the Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka Central University on Sunday, September 27, one day after his appointment. His joining came as students continued protests against his appointment.
Professor Lutfor Rahman is the Pro-Vice-Chancellor of National University. He is also a professor in the Department of Statistics at the University of Dhaka.
Professor Dr. Salma Begum confirmed his joining on Sunday. She said he took charge at the university’s temporary office in Baridhara DOHS in Dhaka.
Speaking to The Daily Campus at night, she said Lutfor Rahman also joined several meetings after taking charge. He could not be reached by phone despite several attempts.
The Secondary and Higher Education Division of the Ministry of Education appointed him on Saturday, September 26. The order was made under Section 11(1) of the Dhaka Central University Act, 2026.
His term as VC will be four years from the day he joins the post. But he will leave the post if he reaches the retirement age before that time.
He will get the same pay and other benefits as in his current post. He will also get other benefits under the rules.
As the chief executive of the university, Lutfor Rahman will stay on the campus full-time. The President and Chancellor may end his appointment at any time if needed.
Students protest
Students of Dhaka Central University have protested against the appointment. They want former Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Nurul Islam to be brought back.
On Sunday, students gathered at the Science Lab crossing in Dhaka. They blocked the road as part of their protest.
Students from several campuses joined the protest from 10am. They carried red cards during the event.
The students said they do not accept the role of the University of Dhaka syndicate at Dhaka Central University. They also objected to the choice of a VC from the University of Dhaka.
The students have made several demands. They want the former VC back and want the university to follow a school model at once.
They also want a study plan for all sessions, starting with the 2021-22 session. They want an administrative building at any one of the seven campuses.
The students also want all teaching, office and study work to start at once. Lutfor Rahman has now taken charge as VC, while the student protest and demands continue.
