An insect was found in curry served at the Central Cafeteria on Wednesday, leaving several students upset and without lunch.
Students of Pabna University of Science and Technology (PUST) have raised concerns after an insect was found in food at the university’s Central Cafeteria on Wednesday, October 7.
The incident took place at about 2pm. A student from the Department of Tourism and Hospitality Management found an insect in curry while having lunch. The students later left the cafeteria without eating.
Several students from the department went to the cafeteria after their exam. They waited in a long line to collect lunch. One student sat at a table and began eating. He then noticed the insect in the curry.
The student showed the food to other students nearby. He also told the cafeteria staff about the matter. The students later left the cafeteria, saying they were angry and upset.
Ruhul Amin, a student of the department, said he waited for about half an hour before getting his food.
“After standing in line for about half an hour, when I finally received the food, I saw that there was a large insect in it,” he said.
He also raised a question about the food and the state of the cafeteria. He said students had spent the day taking exams before going there for lunch.
Ruhul said some students later complained to cafeteria staff. He said the reply from staff made them more upset.
He said staff told them, “Do whatever you want; complain to whoever you can.”
Several calls were made to cafeteria manager Sohan for comment. He did not answer the calls.
Dr Md Ekramul Islam, supervisor of the Central Cafeteria, said he had spoken with the students about the matter.
“I have spoken to them about the matter,” he said. “Perhaps the insect got in after the cooking was completed.”
He said that if the insect had fallen into the food earlier, it would have been boiled and destroyed. He also said he had told the staff to be more careful in the future.
The incident has raised concern among the students about food hygiene at the cafeteria. The students’ account and the supervisor’s response are the facts provided for this report.
The cafeteria supervisor said staff had been told to take more care. No further action or official decision was provided in the information available.
