SSC in January, HSC in June From Next Year — Education Minister Confirms New Exam Calendar

Bangladesh’s public examination calendar will undergo its most significant restructuring in years. Starting next academic year, SSC and equivalent exams will be held in January, and HSC and equivalent exams in June. The Minister of Primary and Mass Education, Dr. A. N. M. Ehsanul Haque Milon, confirmed this plan this week.

According to the minister, the government has taken the initiative to redesign the public examination calendar to make the academic year more timely and better aligned with international standards. The new calendar is the cornerstone of this effort.

The Confirmed 2027 Exam Dates

The ministry has already gone beyond months and named the exact dates. As announced earlier at a ministry press conference, the schedule stands as follows:

  • SSC and equivalent 2027: starts January 7, ends February 6, 2027
  • HSC and equivalent 2027: starts June 6, ends July 13, 2027

The full exam routine has been finalized and is expected to be published soon. For current Class 10 and first-year college students, this means preparation timelines are now clear more than a year in advance — a luxury previous batches rarely had.

Why the Calendar Is Changing

The main problem lies in the overloaded academic calendar. Disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and other factors delayed the entire educational cycle by several months, and the ministry states that it is working to gradually normalize it.

The minister has expressed the goal in personal terms: no student should lose two years of their life due to delays caused by the ministry or policymakers. Everything—exams, results, and university admissions—is being coordinated to prevent such a loss.

There is also a global perspective. The HSC exam was deliberately scheduled for June and July so that students receive their results in time to apply for places in the fall semester at universities abroad. Under the previous system, many students missed international deadlines and lost an entire year waiting.

The December Plan That Was Dropped

Interestingly, the calendar could have been even tighter. An earlier proposal placed the SSC exam in December. However, in a consultation with the Ministry of Education, the majority of participating students, teachers, and tutors objected, arguing that abruptly cutting roughly four months from the academic year would put immense pressure on students and create learning gaps.

The government listened to the concerns and relented. January became the compromise: earlier than in the current cycle, but without compressing an entire generation. Officials say the calendar will be gradually adjusted over the coming years until the backlog of places is completely eliminated.

What Students Should Do

If you’re taking the 2027 SSC or HSC exams, use the announced dates as a guide for your planning. Count down from January 7 or June 6, create your study schedule, and don’t wait for the exam order to be set to start preparing: the subjects won’t change, only the order of the exams.
